Clinical Manifestations of HIV/AIDS Prisoners with and without Antiretroviral Therapy

Objectives: This study aimed to see the differences of the oral lesion in HIV/AIDS prisoners with and without antiretroviral therapy. Those differences will be compared by CD4 cell counts, long term of using antiretroviral therapy, and the types of antiretroviral therapy.
Methods: This is an observational study with a descriptive analytic and cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted on 68 prisoners with HIV/AIDS at the first class state detention house of Central Jakarta with 52 prisoners who have been treated by antiretroviral therapy and 16 prisoners who have not been treated by antiretroviral therapy.
Results: 29 prisoners out of 68 prisoners have oral lesions. Hyperpigmentation and Oral Candidiasis were the most common findings in this study. On the other hand, Hairy Leukoplakia was found in an individual in which it’s existence has a significant correlation with HIV/AIDS. Based on the chi-square test, there was no significant correlation between the appearance of oral lesions and consumption of antiretroviral (p = 0.919) and also with CD4 counts (p = 0.533).
Conclusions: It can be concluded that the oral lesions in HIV/AIDS prisoners who have been treated and have not been treated by antiretroviral therapy did not show a difference significantly. However, some oral lesions that have a significant correlation with HIV/AIDS were found in some individuals.
