Flexure Strength of Ten Dental CAD/CAM Materials

Objectives: To test the biaxial flexure strength of ten commercially available CAD/CAM materials according to ISO 6872_2015.
Methods: Materials (n=10) tested in this study: Group-1:Tetric® CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent), Group-2:LavaTM Ultimate(3M ESPE), Group-3:Cerasmart®(GC), Group-4:ParadigmTM(3M ESPE), Group-5:Enamic®(Vita), Group-6:IPS Empress® CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent), Group-7:Celtra®Duo Unfired (Dentsply), Group-8:Celtra®Duo Fired(Dentsply), Group-9:n!ceTM(Straumann), and Group-10:IPS e.max® CAD(Ivoclar Vivadent). Cylinders (14.0mm diameter) were milled using a Sirona Cerec inLab MC XL milling system. Disc specimens (1.2±0.1mm thickness) were sectioned from cylinders. Groups-8 and 10 were fired prior to the polishing process per manufacturer’s instructions. Specimens were polished thru 1200 grit SiC and then loaded in a piston-on-three ball-testing at a rate of 0.5 mm/minute in the Instron Universal testing machine.

Strength values were calculated according to ISO 6872:2015.

σ = -0.2387 P(X-Y)/b2

σ=maximum center tensile strength in (MPa); P=load causing fracture (N); X=loading constant derived from loading configuration and Poison’s ratio (ν= 0.25); Y=loading constant derived from loading configuration and Poison’s ratio (ν= 0.25); B=thickness of specimen
Results: Data was analyzed using (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc analysis for statistical differences between groups (p≤0.05).
Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, IPS e.max®CAD had the highest biaxial flexure strength and was significantly higher than all other groups. A significant difference in biaxial flexural strength was seen between the fired and unfired Celtra Duo groups.
