Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of charcoal and non-charcoal toothpastes on whitening of teeth. Methods: Twenty extracted teeth were placed in 1:10 concentration of Clorox® bleach and water solution at 37oC for 24 hours, to disinfect. One week prior to whitening treatment, teeth were placed in distilled water. After 24-hours storage in distilled water solution, baseline color coordinates (L*, a*, and b*) were recorded of each sample using a Crystaleye Spectrophotometer® (Olympus), and the difference from pure white W* was calculated. Two toothpastes were tested (n=10): Black Is White (CURAPROX) (Group 1: charcoal) and Enzycal (CURAPROX) (Group 2: non-charcoal). Teeth were brushed according to manufacturer’s instructions. The brush was placed at a 30 degree angle on the tooth with short circular movements for 2 minutes with moderate pressure. All samples were measured with the spectrophotometer; color coordinates (L*, a*, and b*) and W* were obtained after brushing. The crown body overall color difference ΔE* was calculated using the baseline values as a reference. Between-group comparisons of ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, ΔW*, and ΔE* were conducted via the independent-samples t-test. Within-group comparisons of pre-treatment values with post-treatment values (for L*, a*, b*, and W*) were conducted via the paired t-test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: Results are shown in Table 1. The mean ΔL* was significantly higher for the non-charcoal toothpaste than for the charcoal toothpaste (p=0.028). Additionally, for the non-charcoal toothpaste, the mean L* was significantly higher after brushing compared to baseline (p=0.001), and the mean W* was significantly lower after brushing compared to baseline (p=0.005). Other differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusions: Use of the non-charcoal toothpaste results in higher L* values and lower W* values compared to baseline, as well as higher ΔL* compared to the charcoal toothpaste.
