Glass Ionomer Containing Silver Diamine Fluoride Demonstrated Increased Bonding Efficiency

Objectives: To investigate the shear bond strength and microleakage of glass-ionomer cement (GIC) containing silver-diamine fluoride (SDF).
Methods: 42 and 45 sound human permanent premolars were used for the shear bond strength measurement and microleakage test, respectively. Teeth were divided into 3 groups: 1) GIC (Fuji IX), 2) GIC (Fuji IX)+SDF (Saforide), and 3) GIC (Fuji IX)+SDF (Topamine). To measure shear bond strength, the occlusal surface was reduce to a flat dentin surface and mounted in cold-curing resin. A mold was clamped onto the occlusal surface of each tooth and filled with its respective material. A universal testing machine was used to measure shear bond strength. To evaluate microleakage, a cavity (3-mm diameter, at least 1.5-mm deep) was prepared on the buccal surface. The cavity was restored with its respective material. After 500 cycles of thermocycling, the specimens were immersed in a tracer solution, cut longitudinally at each side of the cavity midline, and inspected under 10x magnification to determine the penetration of the tracer along the cavity walls. Statistical analysis of the shear bond strength and microleakage results was performed using using one-way ANOVA and the Chi-square test, respectively. Statistical significance was considered at p<0.05.
Results: There were significant differences in shear bond strength between groups 1 and 2 and between groups 1 and 3. Group 1 had the lowest shear bond strength among the groups; however, there was no significant difference between groups 2 and 3. The microleakage test results were not significantly different between groups at the enamel margin. However, group 1 demonstrated a significantly higher dye penetration score at the dentin margin compared with group 3.
Conclusions: Incorporating SDF into GIC does not increase the material’s microleakage. Moreover, bonding efficacy is improved by adding SDF to GIC.
