Adherence to the Dental Radiographic Recommendations By the American Dental Association at University of Texas School of Dentistry

Objectives: To determine if the standards of radiographic indications at the University of Texas School of Dentistry are adherent with the guidelines set in place by the American Dental Association.
Methods: The data was collected from our dental institution using electronic health record (axiUm) from 31st August 2016 to 1st September 2017. We identified if patients with completed comprehensive oral evaluations received panoramic radiographs or full mouth series based on the ADA radiology guidelines.
Results: Out of a total 4291 patients, 18.6% of patients received a Panoramic radiograph and 39.0% received a Full Mouth Series. There were no valid reasons documented in 49.5% of patients who received a Panoramic radiograph, and 41.9% of those who underwent a Full Mouth Series.
Conclusions: Opportunities existing to improve the quality of care delivered to patients. Dentists should conduct a clinical examination, consider the patient’s oral and medical histories, as well as consider the patient’s vulnerability to environmental factors that may affect oral health before conducting a radiographic examination.
