Micro Shear Bond Strength of 10-MDP and 4-META Resin-Cements
Objectives: To measure micro-SBS of some resin-cements to dentin and ceramics; adhesion among these materials represents an issue in fixed-prosthodontics. The selected cements contain 10-MDP or 4-META adhesive monomers. Methods: Sixty human molars were used as pure dentin substrate. Sixty ceramic tablets 12x12x2mm of cubic-zirconia Katana UTML, and 60 of lithium-disilicate IPS e.maxCAD-LT were assigned to 3 cement-groups: Panavia-V5 (P-V5), Panavia-SA (P-SA): both from Kuraray; OverCEM-SA (OC-SA, Overfibers, Italy); manufacturer instructions were followed. Zirconia was sandblasted (Al2O3 powder, 50mm); lithium-disilicate was conditioned (35% H3PO4, K-Etchant). Cement cylinders (1.7mm diameter, 2mm height) were created on the substrates using VPS-molds. All samples were stored in water (24h, 37°C) before micro-SBS. Failure areas were calculated (Zeiss-stereomicroscope, Zen software) and failure patterns were determined. Micro-SBS values were analyzed with Kruskall-Wallis and MCT (alpha=.05). Results: Results are summarized in Table 1. Each cement showed significantly different SBS values (p<.0001). OC-SA showed the highest micro-SBS to both ceramics, while P-V5 to dentin-substrate. Adhesive-failures were mostly observed in all groups, although P-V5 also showed cohesive failures (dentin). Conclusions: PanaviaV5 cement showed the highest bond-strength to dentin. OverCEM SA showed the highest bonding values to cubic-zirconia and lithium-disilicate ceramics. Further long-term aging data are necessary to evaluate the bonding stability and the effect of combined 10-MDP/4-META.
