Social Support Effects towards Javanese Pregnant Woman's Periodontal Health

Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the closest family social support for pregnant women on their periodontal health.
Methods: This study used a cross sectional method with a sample of 49 pregnant women in Local Public Health Center in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data collection was done by questionnaire to see the behavior of family support for the efforts of mothers to maintain dental and oral health of pregnant women (knowledge, attitudes, actions), behavior of pregnant women (knowledge, attitudes, brushing teeth, number of dentist visits), and hygiene status of the cavity pregnant mother's mouth. Intra-oral examinations are also conducted, such as CPI (Community Periodontal Index) and OHI-S (Oral Hygiene Index Simplified). The data obtained were analyzed by spearman correlation test and multiple linear regression.
Results: 65.3% of pregnant women had periodontal abnormalities in the form of gingivitis and found several predictor factors related linearly to the occurrence of periodontal problems in pregnant women (oral hygiene status (p = 0.002); actions of pregnant women in maintaining health and hygiene oral cavity (p = 0.026); family support attitude (p = 0.012); family knowledge (p = 0.005)
Conclusions: Family support has an influence on the occurrence of periodontal problems in pregnant women.
