Enamel Wear: Nanoindentation Results of Six Different Preventive Treatments

Objectives: The higher consumption of acidic beverages has increased the wear and promoting loss of dental structure. The development of strategies to reduce this kind of demineralization and promote remineralization of dental tissue is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate by nanoindentation the effect of six kinds of gels to 3 different enamel conditions.
Methods: Eighteen specimens (4x4mm) from bovine incisors were used, equally and randomly allocated in three groups: sound-(S), eroded-(E), eroded-treated-eroded-(ETE). Each group was divided in six subgroups according to the treatment: water-(W), placebo-(P), sodium fluoride-(NaF), titanium tetrafluoride-(TF), chlorhexidine-(CHX) and proanthocyanidins-(PA). Sound samples were kept in artificial saliva by 24h, treated with gels for 1min and rinse deionized water. Specimens of the E and ETE was immersed in cola soft drink for five minutes, 3x a day for 5/days. The samples were stocked immersed in artificial saliva. After the last cola immersion, the samples were treated with the six treatments as on sound enamel; and afterward ETE received one immersion of 5min in cola. Nanoindentation test was realized with peak load of 1000uN and a load function 5-2-5. Six indents were made on each sample and nanohardness (H) and elastic modulus (EM) were evaluated. The data were analyzed by the 2-way ANOVA test, followed Tukey test (p<0.05).
Results: There was a statistical difference for H between S- E, S- ETE and to EM between S-E; S-ETE and E-ETE. Evaluating the treatments: W showed lowest values of H and EM for S condition and T presented higher values for EM in S and E condition.
Conclusions: In conclusion, the erosive groups had the lowest values of nanohardness and elastic modulus when compared with S samples treated and T treatment demonstrated higher values EM when compared the other treatments.
