Consensus on Cariology Undergraduates’ Teaching for the Caribbean Countries

Objectives: To achieve a cariology consensus for undergraduates in dental schools of the Caribbean Region.
Methods: At a first stage, dental schools’ deans from the Dominican Republic (DR) and Puerto Rico (PR) were invited to participate in the project. Then, a 40-hour update workshop on caries understanding was conducted with 24 undergraduates’ cariology teachers, selected by each of the dental schools in DR. After that, six groups with cariology teachers and deans from all dental schools in DR and PR were created to work in personal/online meetings during 6 weeks with the cariology domains described in the related European Core document and the Colombian Consensus. During the meetings each group worked with one of the six domains to suggest changes based on the region context. Afterwards, every group had to work on their suggestions and after six weeks a second meeting was held. This was a 1-day workshop with representatives from the DR and PR dental schools and with cariology experts with experience in consensus to advise and guide the process.
In a second stage, a half-day workshop was held in PR plus a personal meeting in London with dental-school representatives from Trinidad and Tobago (TT) to include their suggestions on each consensus domain.
Results: A total of 15 dental schools (DR: n=13; PR: n=1: TT: n=1) were included with around 80 participants. Based on the European and Colombian Cariology Consensus a Caribbean Region consensus was achieved. Finally, six teaching domains were included: The knowledge base; Risk assessment: diagnosis and synthesis; Treatment decision-making: preventive strategies and non-surgical therapy; Treatment decision-making: operative therapy; Public health and, Evidenced-based cariology.
Conclusions: A consensus on cariology teaching for undergraduates was achieved for the Caribbean Countries Dental Schools. Implementation strategies are being initiated.
