Baseline Demographic Characteristics of Mexican Children Treated with SDF-GI.

Objectives: To evaluate the demographic information collected at baseline of the participants that were enrolled in a clinical study to compare silver diamine fluoride and silver diamine fluoride + glass ionomer restorations used to treat caries-affected primary teeth of children from Mexico.
Methods: Approval from University of Utah Institutional Review Board (IRB) was obtained. Nine participants that agreed to participate and that met the inclusion criteria were recruited. Participants completed a survey regarding demographic characteristics, oral health behaviors, oral health service utilization, and self-reported oral health status, knowledge and attitudes. The data collected were compiled in REDCap and analyzed STATA version 14.2 (Stata Corporation, College Station, Texas).
Results: Although participants overall self-reported a good oral health status, all the participants had caries in at least one tooth. A total of 9 participants aged 5 to 10 years comprising 33% boys and 67% girls participated. 100% had caries in at least one primary tooth. 56% of the participants were 5-7 years old and 44% of the participants were 8-10 years old. 100% of the participants were Mexicans. Other demographic factors to highlight 44% of the participants had health insurance. 100% of the participants were born in the Mexico.
Conclusions: This population would benefit from education on the early signs and symptoms of oral health disease. This population required dental treatment and was treated at the University with two, cost effective treatment methods with successful outcomes.
