COMPARISON OF TIME OF MAXIMUM CLINICAL EFFICACY OF APPLICATION OF BENZOCAINE AND LIDOCAINE IN GEL

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare the time to efficacy in the reduction of puncture pain after application of Benzocaine 20%or Lidocaine 2% gel in different times (2 or 5 minutes), in patients requiring treatment that included the use of posterior superior alveolar anesthesia in dental clinics of UFES

Methods: 44 patients were selected, divided into 2 groups: Benzocaine or Lidocaine. The patients received aplication of anesthetics in the time of 2 or 5 minutes, according to the side that would be anesthetized (2 minutes on the right side and 5 minutes on the left side). After performing the anesthetic technique, they were asked about a presence or absence of pain at the time of puncture and were instructed to score on a Visual Analogue Scale the degree corresponding to the intensity of the pain.
Results: Of the patients in group 1, 80% of those who received benzocaine for 2 minutes and 91,6% of those in whom the anesthetic was applied for 5 minutes did not report pain during anesthetic puncture. Of the patients in group 2, in both times of lidocaine application, 90,9% reported not feeling pain at the moment of the anesthetic technique. No statistically significant difference ( p< 0,05) was found between the efficacy of the two anesthetics evaluated, as well as the different application times under analysis ( Mann-Whitney).
Conclusions: The anesthetics Benzocaine 20% and Lidocaine 2% reduce the pain of the puncture in the same magnitude and 2 minutes proved to be as effective as 5 minutes, therefore, following the correct instructions of application of the products, can be reduce the waiting time for perform the puncture.
