Different Treatments for Cemento-osseous Dysplasia of The Mandibular Bone
Objectives: Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is a benign condition of the jaws and conservative treatment is recommended to COD. Pathological investigation showed that in the lesion there is connective tissue lacking cells, which would bring the risk of osteomyelitis due to the weakened anti-infection and regeneration capacity of the tissue. Considering that feature, different surgical approaches to COD should be taken in different cases. The aim of the study is to investage the effect of two treatment methods of cemento-osseous dysplasia of the mandibular bone. Methods: In this study we analyze five cases of COD with or without surgery treatments. In the first kind of cases there presents inflammation symptom surrounding the COD lesion or the lesion grew like ‘tumor’ we removed the teeth as well as the COD lesion. In the other cases we extracted the tooth with the healthy COD lesion left in the mandible. Results: We followed up the patients comparing the different ways to treat COD. In both kinds of cases, the bone of the surgical area healed well post-operation after 1 year follow up. There is no significant difference between the two methods. And there is no relapse and inflection occurs in both kinds of cases. And there is no significant change in the volume of the lesion that we left in the jaw. Conclusions: The result indicates that in normal conditions we don’t have to do any treatment to COD if the bacteria were kept away from the lesion. Whereas surgical approach should be taken if there is infection surrounding the tooth or sclerotic bone to reduce the risk of osteomyelitis.
