Management of Patients with Gagging Reflex Problem During Maxillary Impression
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess methods for managing patients suffering from gagging reflex during maxillary alginate impression recording by application of different effective tips as prophylactic and suppressive precautions. Methods: Study included 100 patients of both males and females. The age ranging from 18-60 years. Patients of the whole sample with gagging reflex problem can be classified into three types of gagging reflex (GR). According to the Akarslan $ Bicer whom determined the patient sensitivity to gag reflex in response to upper impression-taking procedures. The first type is Mild GR where the patients displayed only mild discomfort sub gagging. The second type is Moderate GR where the patients displayed only sensitivity to GR without vomiting hypersensitivity. The third type is a severe GR Where the patient displayed gagging reflex associated with vomiting. All the patients with GR were managed using various tips as a prophylactic and suppressive precautions Mangment techniques used includes; Upright head position, Lifting head forward, Intellectual Distraction, Place mouth wash on the fitting surface of impression, Sprinkle salts on tip of the tongue, Use topical anesthesia (Avocaine), Deep swallowing, Close eye and and breath rapidly from the nose, Squeeze the right wrist, Combine multiple tips and go fast and give encouragement to patient.
Results: The result reveals that for the mild GR, the deep swallowing is the most effective tip that suppress the GR followed by rapid breath from the nose. For the moderate GR the most effective tip is sprayed salts on the tip of the tongue followed by topical local anesthesia and squeeze the wright wrist. For the severe GR the most effective tip is go fast and give encouragement to the patient followed by intellectual distraction. Conclusions: Mangment of gagging reflex is recommended for successful dental treatment. combining different methods are the most effective
