Current Oral and Recreational Behavioral Trends in HIV Disease
Objectives: The funded study that primarily aimed to characterize the oral microbiome in both HIV+ and HIV- persons included a questionnaire to collect demographic and epidemiology parameters (n=32). Despite a number of questions with multiple responses, an initial epidemiological analysis used obvious break points in a truncated manner to broadly characterize statistical differences in oral and recreational behavior trends between HIV+ and HIV- persons. The purpose of this study was to analyze the full range of responses in the questionnaire to determine accuracy of the original breakpoints and identify any additional outstanding trends. Methods: For each question the exact numerical values as well as percentages for each response was calculated. Bar graphs were generated using these numerical values in order to provide a visual comparison of individual responses between the two groups. Breakpoint lines for the truncated analysis were also included. Results: Overall the majority of oral and recreational behaviors were found to be similar between HIV- and HIV+ patient populations similar to the result of the truncated analysis. This implied a good overall match between the groups in the cohort used for the oral microbiome analyses. Some notable differences seen in the full response analysis were a higher percentage of HIV+ persons that never brush their teeth, use mouthwash more frequently, receive teeth cleanings, experience xerostomia, are current cigarette smokers, and have smoked longer, compared to HIV- persons. Conclusions: The results of the comprehensive response analysis were largely similar to the truncated response analysis, verifying the relative accuracy of the original breakpoints, and revealing additional epidemiological findings that can be utilized in interpretations for both epidemiology and microbiome assessments.
