Bond Strength Durability of Different Adhesives

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of different application methods of chlorhexidine (CHX) and adhesive systems to improve immediate bond strength and to stabilize the bonding performance over time.
Methods: Flat dentin surfaces were obtained from 48 extracted molars and divided into four groups according to the tested adhesives: Clearfil SE Bond 2 (Kuraray), Peak Universal Bond (Ultradent), OptiBond Solo Plus (Kerr), OptiBond Solo Plus + 2% CHX pretreatment. Each adhesive system was applied to dentin surfaces according to manufacturers’ instructions. Peak Universal Bond that contains 0.2% CHX in its formulation was applied in etch-and-rinse mode. Following the bonding procedures, composite blocks (Clearfil Majesty ES-2, Kuraray) were built up (4mm in height). Half of the specimens (n=6) were stored in distilled water in 37°C for 24 h and the other half was thermocycled for 20,000 cycles between 5°C and 55°C. Specimens were vertically sectioned to obtain 1.0mm2 cross-sectional sticks and then subjected to microtensile bond strength (µTBS) testing. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test.
Results: Immediately Peak Universal Bond showed significantly lower bond strength, however no significant difference was found among the aged groups. After aging, the bond strengths of all groups increased significantly, except for OptiBond Solo Plus + CHX group. The data is presented in the table.
Conclusions: Aging did not negatively affect the bond strength to dentin. CHX included in the formulation of adhesive system rather than applying separately seems to enhance the bonding performance.
