Growth of Evidence-based Publications in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Journals 2000-2017
Objectives: The aim of this project was to compare trends in the publication of higher-level evidence in four Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) journals during the past 18 years. Methods: The OMS journals analyzed were: The British Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS), The Journal of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery (JCMS), International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS), and The Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS). A search of NLM’s PubMed database was completed using the “publication type” filters to determine the percentage of higher-level evidence articles within each journal from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2017 in 2-year increments. The filters were used to return results only for meta-analyses, systematic reviews, RCTs, and multicenter studies. The filters were also used to eliminate comments, editorials, historical articles, interviews, and letters. A sample of the search results from each journal was checked manually to confirm the accuracy of the filters. Results: Higher-level evidence was found for 6.8% of all publications in OMS journals through the last 18 years. However, in years 2016–2017, higher-level evidence composed 13.8% of publications, which is a strong increase from the 3.6% in the two-year span of 2000–2001. The IJOMS displayed the greatest increase (3.9%-27.2%), especially within the last five years. Conclusions: During the years 2000-2017, all four of the journals displayed a positive trend in the publication of higher-level evidence. This growth is consistent with the OMS specialty’s commitment to evidence-based practice in patient care and is expected to continue.
