Growth of Evidence-based Publications in General Dentistry Journals 2000-2017

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the trends of higher-level evidence publications in four general dentistry journals over the past 18 years.
Methods: The general dentistry journals evaluated were: General Dentistry (Gen Dent), Operative Dentistry (Oper Dent), Journal of Dentistry (J Dent), Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). NLM’s PubMed database was used to determine the percentage of high-level evidence publications compared to the total number of publications in each journal from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2017 in two-year increments. Comments, editorials, historical articles, interviews, and letters were removed using the “article type” filter for each journal to calculate total publications. The filter was then used to provide results only for meta-analyses, multicenter studies, systematic reviews and RCTs. A sample of search results from each journal was checked manually to confirm PubMed filter accuracy.
Results: Three of the four journals (Gen Dent, J Dent, JADA) showed a positive trend in the percentage of higher-level evidence publications, with J Dent showing the greatest increase of 11.6% (11.4%-23.0%). Higher-level evidence publications made up 14.6% of all articles in general dentistry journals, with an overall increase from 9.5% from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2001 to 14.4% from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2017.
Conclusions: Overall, general dentistry journals have increased higher-level evidence publications in the past 18 years. Oper Dent did not display a positive trend because of its irregular pattern with large spikes and drops throughout the time studied but contributes a high number of higher-level evidence publications. The three journals with positive trends (Gen Dent, J Dent, JADA) appear to maintain a steady growth in higher-level evidence publications. This growth is predicted to continue since evidence-based practice is highly desirable for patient care.
