Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of the University of the Philippines College of Dentistry CliniciansAY2015-2016 on Face Protection
Objectives: Clinic protocols when treating patients require use of prescribed clinical attire including personal protective equipment. This paper aimed to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the University of the Philippines College of Dentistry clinicians on face protection. Methods: A quantitative-qualitative descriptive study design was used to describe the KAP. Thirty-three (33) participants were surveyed to assess knowledge and attitude towards recommended face protection. Eighteen (18) from the 33 agreed to be observed in the clinics while working on a patient or in the laboratory and 12 continued to the focus group discussion which determined the factors affecting their attitude and practices. Results: The survey revealed majority of the respondents have knowledge on the recommended type of facemask and protective eyewear, correct frequency of changing facemasks, and use of face shields. However, they were unaware of the eye hazards during dental procedures and recommended manner of cleaning the eyewear. There is positive attitude on facemask use when working on patients or in the laboratory and changing facemasks between patients and/or when visibly soiled. During the observation phase, all use facemask and protective eyewear when treating patients or in the laboratory but none wore the recommended facemask (N95) and eyewear. Facemask and eyewear were correctly worn throughout the procedure and disposed immediately after patient dismissal. Though eyewear were removed after procedures, none of the respondents cleaned correctly. Factors affecting the attitude and practices were: (1) health (2) infection control (3) visibility (4) professionalism, and (5) academic sanctions. Conclusions: Clinicians have adequate knowledge on face protection, positive attitude and satisfactory practice of using facemask and eyewear when working on patients or in the laboratory. Varying personal factors affect the clinicians’ use of face protection.
