Effects of Cellulose Nanocrystal on Physical Properties of Resin Blends

Objectives: To test the effect of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) on physical properties of experimental resin blends.
Methods: Resin blends (50%BisEMA; 30%TeEGDMA; 14%HEMA; 4%ethanol; 2%photoinitiators) were loaded with pre-silanated or non-silanated (-S or -NS) CNC at 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% or 3.0% by weight (n=10). Mixtures were stirred for 24-hour followed by 24-hour vacuum degassing. Control group (0%) was produced with resin blend only. The blends were light-cured for two minutes and tested for flexural strength(FS) and water sorption/solubility (WS-S). Specimens for FS followed ISO 4049 and were kept dried (FSd) and in artificial saliva (FSas) for 24h at 37°C. For WS-S, specimens (4mmx2mm) were analyzed after 28-day water incubation at 37oC. Data were analyzed by three individual two-way ANOVA, using the material (-S or -NS) and the percentage as the two factors, and also post hoc multiple comparisons were performed using Tukey’s test, at α=0.05%.
Results: In relation to FSd results, all concentrations of CNC-NS and CNC-S at 0.5% were similar to control group. For FSas results, CNC-NS at 0.5% and 1% showed lower FS compared to control (p<0.05). For WS results, CNC-S and -NS at 3% showed statistically higher values than control. Solubility results for CNC-NS, were all similar to control; however, for CNC-S at 0.5% and 1.5%, S was higher than control.
Conclusions: Depending on the concentration and treatment, CNC can be used into a resin blend without significant change of its physical properties.
