Micro CT Analysis of Novel SWEEPS Er:YAG Laser Mode for Endodontic Retreatment

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of novel SWEEPS (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming) Er:YAG laser activated irrigation mode in the removal of root canal filling after rotary retreatment using micro CT analysis.
Methods: Thirty (n=30) extracted single-rooted human teeth with single canals, without previous endodontic treatments, root caries, external resorption, were selected for the study. The root canals were instrumented with rotary Reciproc instruments up to size R25. After 1 week, retreatment of all specimens (n=30) was performed using the same rotary technique (R25). All specimens were subdivided into three groups (n=10), according to the type of irrigation after mechanical retreatment with rotary instruments: conventional syringe and needle irrigation (control group); Er:YAG laser with PIPS (Photon-Initiated Photoacoustic Streaming) fiber tip and Er:YAG laser with SWEEPS fiber tip in SWEEPS mode. Specimens were scanned in a micro CT device after the filling procedure, after the retreatment procedure with rotary files and after irrigation to analyze the difference of the filling remnants. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallisov tests (p<0.05).
Results: There was no statistically significant difference in removal of the root canal filling between rotary retreatment alone or activated irrigation after rotary retreatment using PIPS or SWEEPS Er:YAG laser modes (p>0.05).
Conclusions: Novel SWEEPS Er:YAG laser mode did not improve the removal of root canal filling remnants.
