Color Stainability & Gloss Retention of CAD/CAM Resin Composite Blocks

Objectives: To evaluate color stainability and gloss retention of CAD/CAM resin composite blocks.
Methods: Five blocks such as Camouflage Now (CN) (Prismatik, CA), Cerasmart (CS) (GC America, IL), Vita Enamic (VE) (VITA Zahnfabrik, Germany), Lava Ultimate (LU) (3M, MN) and Shofu Block HC (SB) (Shofu, Japan) were tested. For color stainability, samples (1mm D × 15mm H) were prepared according to the ISO 4049 and immersed in deionized water and coffee for 1 week. ΔE was measured by X-Rite (X-Rite, MI). Samples (15mm D × 1mm H) were prepared for gloss retention measures. Gloss values were taken at three random points for each sample using Novo-Curve glossmeter (Rhopoint instruments, UK) at steps of an initial, post-abrasion, and post-polishing. The results were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05).
Results: ΔE values were significantly different among various groups when tested in water and coffee at 1 week (p=0.001). In water, CS (0.74) was significantly higher ΔE than CN (0.31), VE (0.13), LU (0.31) and SB (0.13). In coffee, SB (2.72) was significantly higher ΔE than CN (1.26), VE (0.75), LU (1.62) & CS (0.98). Glossmeter data was significantly influenced by “materials × treatment” interaction (p=0.000). Initial gloss unit was measured 78.37 for CN, 80.59 for CS, 89.69 for LU, 83.78 for VE and 77.68 for SB. Changes in post-abrasion gloss (%) showed that CN (79.05) and CS (77.05) had the highest, followed by LU (60.83) and SB (62.18), and VE (13.77) had the lowest. Changes in post-polishing gloss (%) revealed 90 or above for all (CN 99.40, LU 94.31, CS 94.03, SB 90.02) but VE (56.19).
Conclusions: CN exhibited compelling stain stability and gloss retention capability. Results suggest that CN could enable less susceptible to esthetic changes and better surface finish of restorations.
