Bond Strength of Self-etch and Etch/Rinse Adhesives

Objectives: The objective of this study was to experimentally evaluate shear bond strength of self-etching and etch/rinse type adhesives on dentin.
Methods: Human third molar teeth (n=15/gp) were obtained, buccal surfaces were flattened, and mounted into resin. Dentin surfaces and adhesives were prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions with DenTASTIC UNO, UNO-AD (MCP), Admira Bond, Clearfil Photo Bond, OptiBond Solo Plus, Optibond All in One, G- ænial, and Xeno IV. Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative was formed into a cylinder mold and light cured (40sec) onto the bonding agent area of the dentin. Specimens were stored at 37°C for 24 hours then thermocycled 500 times in deionized water at 5°C and 55°C. Shear bond tests were performed at a rate of 1mm/minute. Maximum stress (MPa) data were compared and statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA SNK with P<0.05 for significance.
Results: Table below indicates test results for shear bond strength and also indicates etching versus self-etching materials.
Conclusions: When etching surfaces with DenTASTIC UNO, UNO-AD (MCP), Admira Bond, and Optibond Solo Plus a significant shear bond strength was noted. When using self-etching materials OptiBond All in One and G-ænial a significant shear bond strength was observed. Materials with 29 MPa and greater shear bond strength for adhesives have shown the ability to perform well clinically for restorations.
