Effects of Miniscrew-assisted Non-extraction Versus Extraction Treatment
Objectives: To compare the treatment effects between non-extraction and extraction treatments in borderline extraction cases using lateral cephalograms and CBCT for measurements. Methods: The sample consisted of 24 non-growing patients with mild to moderate crowding. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of 12 patients who received non-extraction treatment with total arch distalization assisted by miniscrews; Group 2 consisted of 12 patients who received extraction of premolar treatment. The treatment effects were evaluated with cephalograms and CBCT scans. Data were analyzed using paired and independent sample t tests to evaluate the treatment effects within each group and between groups, respectively. Results: Treatments in both of the two groups achieved satisfactory outcome. According to cephalometric analysis, the changes of lips protrusion, nasolabial angle, incisors inclination, mandibular plane angle, ANB, overjet and overbite were not significantly different between Groups 1 and 2 (p>0.05).Based on CBCT measurements, no significant difference was found between two groups in the average degree of root resorption (p>0.05). Conclusions: For borderline extraction cases, non-extraction treatment with total arch distalization assisted by miniscrews could produce similar treatment changes compared to extraction treatment.
