Clinical and Microbiological Efficacy of Propolis Containing-Dentrifice in Orthodontic Patients
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of a dentifrice containing 1% of Brazilian Red Propolis (BRP) in adolescents under orthodontic treatment. Methods: This is a double-blind, controlled and randomized clinical trial. A total of 100 participants, caries free (ICDAS II 0), residents of a city without public water fluoridation, were randomized into 2 groups, the first one received fluoride dentifrice (1450 ppm) and the second one fluoride dentifrice (1450 ppm) incorporated with BRP. The gingival bleeding index (GBI) test was performed and saliva was collected in the baseline (D0) and after 4 weeks (D28) for microbiological analysis of Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and gram-negative bacteria. Data from GBI and Colony Forming Units (CFU) (log10) were expressed as mean and standard deviation. Results: The two groups reduced GBI significantly, G1 (p=0,001) and G2 (p< 0,001) with no significant difference in intergroup analysis (p=0,135). In the intra-group analysis for gram-negative bacteria, only G2 (p <0.001) had a significant reduction. For S.mutans bacteria it was observed that in the intragroup analysis that only G2 had a statistically significant reduction (p <0.001), in the intergroup analysis there was significance (p=0.006) of the G2 group when compared to G1. Conclusions: BRP dentifrice demonstrated better clinical and microbiological activity. Future studies are needed to identify better effects to establish the use of dentifrice in biofilm control.
