Effect of Prophylactic Pastes on Surface Gloss of Zirconia
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of prophylactic pastes on the surface gloss of two contemporary zirconia (Zi) materials.
Methods: A total of 120 specimens, composed of two types of Zi (n=60/Zi group) [IPS e.max ZirCAD MT A2, and MT Multi A2 (Ivoclar Vivadent)], were prepared to test the hypothesis.. They were prepared by sectioning the CAD/CAM disks into 2-mm-thick slices (12x14 mm), and sintered, then finished/polished gradually down to 1,200 grit size. Specimens were ultrasonically cleaned, dried, and glazed using their respective glazes (IPS e.max CAD Crystall Spray, IPS Ivocolor, IPS Ivocolor Stain SD1 followed by IPS Ivocolor mixing liquid Allroundglaze) according to manufacturers’ instructions. Baseline gloss was measured with a Glossmeter (Novo-Curve, Rhopoint Instruments, East Sussex, UK) from 3 spots on each specimen. Five specimens from each group were randomly assigned to one of the four groups of the following prophylactic polishing pastes: Proxyt coarse/fine (PC/PF) (IvoclarVivadent), Nupro coarse/fine (NC/NF) (Dentsply). They were applied to the specimens by a calibrated/blind operator using un-impregnated prophylactic cups according to the manufacturers’ instructions for 40s (10 second intervals) under a constant load of 400gr at 3,000rpm. Surface gloss of the specimens was re-measured. A mixed, general linear model was used for statistics, and significance was accepted at p <0.05. Post-hoc comparisons were conducted using Tukey test. Results: There was a significant difference in gloss by groupF[27,112) = 332.31, p < 0.001, eta-squared = 99.8% - meaning 99.8% of the variability in gloss was accounted for by the differences in group. There was significantly higher loss of gloss in Nupro Coarse group compared to all other groups. Proxy Fine had the least effect on gloss compared to all groups with statistical significance (p <0.05).
Conclusions: Nupro Coarse reduced gloss significantly on all materials, while Proxyt Fine produced the least amount of gloss on all surfaces.
