Prevalence Ratio of Oral Alterations in Patients With Helicobacter Pylori and/ or With Gastroesophageal Reflux

Objectives: This study analyzed the prevalence ratio of periodontal diseases and tooth wear in patients with Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori) and/or Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).
Methods: The patients were divided into Groups: GC-control – patients without H. pylori and GERD (n=130), GHP-patients with H. pylori (n=55), GGERD-patients with GERD (n=54) and GGERD+ H. pylori -patients with GERD and H. pylori (n=22). The Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and Dental Wear Index (DWI) were used to exam periodontal disease and tooth wear, respectively. Stimulated saliva flow and saliva pH were evaluated. Association between periodontal disease and tooth wear outcomes and covariates were analyzed by Poisson Regression, using robust variance for determining prevalence ratio (p <0.05).
Results: Patients of GHP presented higher risk to periodontal pockets (GGH: PRa 1.633, p=0,007; GH: PRa 1.43, p=0.023). Salivary flow was related to periodontal conditions; higher prevalence of reduced salivary flow in patients with periodontal diseases (PRa 1.136, p=0.028). Prevalence ratio of tooth wear was related to higher age and female gender for all types of teeth and tooth surfaces, except for molars (p<0.05); to toothbrushing more 2x per day frequency for canines (p<0.001) and premolars (0.028); and to daily or more frequent alcohol intake for premolar teeth (p=0.028) and lingual surfaces (p=0.002).
Conclusions: It was concluded that patients with H. Pylori presented higher prevalence ratio of periodontal diseases that could be aggravated by hyposalivation. However, tooth wear was similar between groups.
