Tips and Tricks for Dentin Bonding with Universal Adhesive 2)-dentin-pretreatment
Objectives: Many dentists clean cavities by air-abrasion or other pretreatments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment on dentin bond strength of a universal adhesive. Methods: Dentin specimens were polished with 320-grit SiC paper and rinsed. Dentin specimens were divided into 6 groups. Group 1 (control) was not subjected to further treatment. Group 2-5 were wet air-abraded for 20 seconds with different powders (Table 1) by using AquaCare Twin (Velopex International). Group 6 were treated with an alkaline gel (Potassium hydroxide agent, ZirClean, Bisco) for 20 sec. The dentin specimens were then rinsed, and treated with a universal adhesive (All-Bond Universal, Bisco) according to the manufacturer’s instruction. The adhesive was air dried, and then was light-polymerized (10 sec at 500mw/cm2). Shear bond strength was tested using the notched-edge shear bond strength test method (ISO 29022:2013). Resin composite (Reveal Bulk, Bisco) was placed on the dentin surface and light-polymerized (40sec at 500mw/cm2). The specimens were then stored in water at 37°C for 24 hours and tested by universal testing machine (Instron, crosshead-speed 1mm/min). The data were analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and Student-t Test. Results: Mean shear bond strengths (n=5) in MPa (standard deviation) are shown in Table 1. Means with different letters are statistically different (p<0.05). Conclusions: Pretreatment of dentin (wet air-abrasion with different powders, or treatment with alkaline agent) didn’t adversely affect dentin bond strength.
