Antifungal effect of Matricaria chamomile, Phyllanthus amarus and Caesalpinia spinosa

Objectives: Evaluate the antifungal effect of organic extract of Matricaria chamomile (MC) , Phyllanthus amarus (PA) and Caesalpinia spinosa (CS) against Candida spp. (Candida albicans, Candida Krusei, Candida tropicalis and Candida parapsilopsis)

Methods: The crude organic extract (COE) of Matricaria chamomile, Phyllanthus amarus and Caesalpinia spinosa were obtained and tried in single and associated way against Candida albicans ATCC 24433, Candida krusei ATCC 6258, Candida tropicalis ATCC 750, Candida parapsilopsis ATCC 22019. The extracts were diluted in dimethylsulfoxide DMSO in two different concentrations 20mg/mL and 40mg/mL. The antifungal effect of these three plants and their combinations were evaluated by well diffusion and an inhibitory halo was reading using a vernier. The controls were DMSO and Nystatin. The level of the significance was assessed with ANOVA followed by Fisher test.
Results: The best results against C. albicans (P<0.05) were CS 20 and 40mg/mL, MC+CS 20 and 40 mg/mL, PA+CS 40 mg/mL and MC+PA+CS 20 and 40 mg/mL; C. tropicalis (P<0.05) were MC+CS 40mg/mL, PA+CS 40 mg/mL, MC+PA+CS 20 and 40 mg/mL; C krusei CS 40mg/mL, MC+CS 20 and 40mg/mL, PA+CS 20 and 40 mg/mL, MC+PA+CS 20 and 40mg/mL; C. Parapsilopsis CS 40mg/mL MC+CS 20 and 40mg/mL, PA+CS 40mg/mL, MC+PA+CS 20 and 40mg/mL. MC didn’t show halo.

Conclusions: Matricaria chamomilla didn’t show any effect against Candida Spp.
Phyllantus amarus showed similar effect than Nystatin control and Caesalpinia spinosa in individual and associated way showed the best result against Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilopsis and Candida tropicalis.
