Bond Durability of Maxcem Elite and RelyX Unicem 2 to Dentin

Objectives: To evaluate the bond durability of two self-adhesive resin cements [Maxcem Elite (Kerr) and RelyX Unicem 2 (3M)] to dentin.
Methods: Dentin substrates were polished with 600-grit SiC paper prior to bonding. A bonding jig (Ultradent) with a cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm) was securely placed over the substrates, and Maxcem Elite or RelyX Unicem 2 was condensed into the mold and allowed to self-cure. The shear bond strength(SBS) was tested after the bonded specimens (n=6) were: 1) stored in DI-water at 37°C for 24 hours and then debonded (initial); 2) stored in DI-water at 37°C for 24 hours, thermocycled (TC) for 5,000 cycles (5/55°C) and then debonded. The bond durability of each cement product was evaluated by comparing initial SBS with SBS after TC. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s method for pair-wise comparison to determine significant differences among groups (p<0.05).
Results: The results are summarized in the table below. ANOVA analysis revealed that: 1) both before and after TC, Maxcem Elite has significantly (p<0.05) higher SBS to dentin than RelyX Unicem 2; 2) neither Maxcem Elite nor RelyX Unicem 2 experienced statistically significant (p>0.05) change in dentin SBS after TC.
Conclusions: Maxcem Elite produced excellent SBS to dentin both before and after thermocycling that are significantly higher than those of RelyX Unicem 2. The bond strength of both Maxcem Elite and RelyX Unicem 2 to dentin are quite stable and not negatively affected by thermocycling.
