RMGI and GI Bond Strength after Saliva or SDF Application

Objectives: To measure the bond strength of a resin-modified glass ionomer to tooth structure after saliva contamination and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application compared to other restoratives.
Methods: Extracted human molars were prepared by wet grinding through 600-grit SiC paper to expose ground enamel and superficial dentin. Test groups (n=8, N=144) included a control with no contamination, artificial saliva contamination, and SDF (Advantage Arrest) followed by rinsing and phosphoric acid or polyacrylic acid conditioning according to manufacturer’s instructions. Shear bond strength specimens were made using Fuji Automix LC (FLC, GC America), Equia Forte Fil (EFF, GC America) and Activa BioActive-Restorative (AB, Pulpdent Corp.) and allowed to cure for 10 minutes at 37C and 99% humidity. Specimens were made and tested using the Ultradent jig according to ISO 29022:2013 with an Instron 5866 at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min after storage in deionized water at 37C for 24 hours. Means and standard deviations were determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA.
Results: Dentin bond strength of FLC was moderately affected (p<0.05) by saliva contamination and by saliva and SDF application for enamel specimens. AB showed negligible bond strength to dentin, but had the highest enamel bond strength except after saliva contamination. EFF had the highest bond strength to dentin and wasn’t affected by contamination.
Conclusions: Self-cured and resin-modified glass ionomers showed significantly higher bond strength to dentin before and after saliva contamination as compared to the compomer.
