Bioactive Approach for a Universal Adhesive System

Objectives: To evaluate the effect on bond strength of a universal adhesive system by adding two novel experimental adhesive resins.
Methods: Thirty-five sound human molars and three current self-etch adhesive systems were used in this study and divided into five groups: GPB (G-Premio Bond, GC), GPB+BZF210 (GC), GPB+BZF21 (GC), SBU (Scotchbond Universal, 3M ESPE) and SE2 (Clearfil SE Bond 2, Kuraray). The adhesives were applied to flat dentin surfaces prepared with #600 SiC paper according to each manufacturer’s instructions. Bond strength was evaluated by μTBS test after 24 h water storage. Fracture modes and interfacial structures were analyzed using SEM. Data was analyzed by One-way ANOVA and Games-Howell test (p<0.05).
Results: Significantly higher μTBS was achieved by additional application of BZF210 and BZF21 compared with GPB itself. SEM observation of the fracture modes showed many bubbles at the adhesive resin interface of GPB and most failure occurred above the smear layer in GBP while more cohesive and mixed failure were observed in GBP+BZF210, GPB+BZF21, SBU and SE2. The interfacial structures showed GBP+BZF210 and GPB+BZF21 had higher number and longer resin tags formation compared to GPB.
Conclusions: The bond strength of GPB was significantly improved by adding BZF210 and BZF21. Converting one-step self-etch adhesive system into two-step application in GPB can significantly improve its bonding efficacy and expand its clinical options.
