Influence of Silver Diamine Fluoride on Bond Strengths Using Universal Adhesives
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of silver diamine fluoride on bonding of a resin composite to enamel and dentin using universal adhesives.
Methods: A 38% silver diamine fluoride, Advantage Arrest™ by Elevate Oral Care, LLC (West Palm Beach, FL) and three universal adhesives were used in this laboratory study: 1) G-Premio Bond (GC); 2) Prime & Bond elect (PE, Dentsply Sirona); and 3) Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (3M ESPE). Flat enamel and dentin surfaces were prepared using a sequence of silicon carbide papers (#4,000-grit surface). Silver diamine fluoride (38%) was applied to the flat enamel and dentin surfaces specimens for 1 minute using a micro brush and then washed with water and dried using a dental three-way syringe, and a control group without pre-treatment was included. The universal adhesives were applied to the enamel and dentin surfaces and a resin composite (FiltekTM Supreme Ultra Universal Restrative, 3M Oral Care) was bonded to surfaces using metal rings in a custom fixture (mold enclosed system) and light cured. After 24 h of water storage at 37°C, shear bond strengths to enamel and dentin were determined using a dynamic test instrument (ElectroPuls E1000) with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. ANOVA and Tukeys’s post hoc test were used for data analysis. Results: The shear bond strengths of universal adhesives to enamel in the three treatment groups (14.7-20.4MPa) were all significantly lower (P<0.05) than the control (28.0-29.2 MPa). In addition, the shear bond strengths of the three dentin treatment groups (14.8-20.9 MPa) were also significantly less when compared to the control (19.3-36.1 MPa).
Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that silver diamine fluoride applications on both enamel and dentin surfaces reduces the bond strengths of a resin composite bonded with universal adhesive systems.
