The 100 Most-cited Papers in Paediatric Dentistry: A Bibliometric Analysis
Objectives: To analyse the 100 most-cited papers in the field of paediatric dentistry focusing on the understanding of the worldwide scenario of knowledge production on this field. Methods: A search of the most-cited papers in paediatric dentistry was performed for the journals included in the category of “Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine” in Thompson Reuters Web of Science citation indexing database up to december 2018. Only papers reporting original results and published in paediatric dentistry journals were included. Two researchers performed the data extraction, which included: number of citations, title, authors number, country, year, journals, study design and thematic field.
Results:
The number of citations of each paper ranged from 42 to 182 with the mean of xx . Seven papers were cited more than 100 times. The majority of the most-cited papers were published in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry (36%), between 2006-2015 (55%), with a cross-sectional design (39%), and with four or less authors (74%). Twenty-five authors participated in two or more top-100 papers. The countries with the highest number of most-cited papers were United States (25%), Australia (11%) and Brazil (9%). Cariology was the thematic field more studied.
Conclusions: The top 100 most cited articles tend to be articles describing cross-sectional studies carried out in the US, reporting significant paediatric dentistry breakthroughs. Cariology is the most common subject area. International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry had a third of the top-100 most-cited papers.
