Effect of Tooth Discoloration on the Novel Bioceramic Material – SavDen

Objectives:
SavDen MTA®, a novel bioceramic material with short setting time and good handling property, was developed by Taipei Medical University in 2016. However, it’s still unclear whether SavDen MTA® will cause tooth discoloration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of tooth discoloration on different bioceramic materials.
Methods: Forty freshly extracted single-canal and free from decay premolars were collected and randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 10): ProRoot MTA®, Biodentine®, SavDen MTA ® and control group. A standardized endodontic access preparation, cleaning and shaping was done in 4 groups. After drying the canal, bio-ceramic material were mixed according to the instruction and ortho-grade obturated into the canal. Color (CIE-LAB) was recorded with the DeguDent Shadepilot spectrophotometer on the crown portion mid-buccal surface, crown portion cervical buccal surface and root portion cervical buccal surface after cleaning and shaping, 1 day after material placement and the following 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24 weeks. Changes in CIELAB color space were measured within each group using the equation: △E = ([Li-L0*]2 + [ai-a0*]2 + [bi-b0*]2)1/2. The results were analyzed with one-way, repeated measures ANOVA test (p < .05).
Results: Our preliminary result demonstrated that ProRoot MTA® had major decrease in L, a and b value in the first week. It caused tooth discoloration significantly and the tooth structure turned into darker and bluer primarily in the crown portion mid-buccal surface and the crown portion cervical buccal surface, Whereas SavDen MTA ® had the similar △E value with Biodentine®. Even though SavDen MTA ® contains bismuth oxide for its radiopacier, tooth color change was not discernable.
Conclusions: It was concluded that Biodentine® and SavDen MTA ® did not significantly cause tooth discoloration.
