Bond Strength of OptiBond eXTRa Universal to Dentin and Enamel

Objectives: A new two-bottle universal adhesive system, OptiBond eXTRa Universal (Kerr), was recently introduced to the market. While maintaining the excellent adhesive performance of XTR, eXTRa provides a couple of important improvements: 1) elimination of unpleasant odor; and 2)compatibility with self-etch, selective-etch, and total-etch. The objective of this study was to compare the bond strength (SBS) of eXTRa with leading commercial universal adhesive systems: Scotchbond Universal (3M), Prime&Bond Elect (Dentyply), Adhese Universal (Ivoclar), Clearfill SE Bond2 (Kuraray), Clearfill Universal Bond Quick (Kuraray), Futurabond U (VOCO).
Methods: Dentin substrates were polished with 600 grit SiC paper and bovine enamel substrates were pumice-cleaned prior to bonding. Each adhesive was applied per its IFU. A bonding jig (Ultradent) with a cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm) was securely placed on adhesive-covered substrate. Herculite XRV(KERR) was condensed into the mold and light cured. The bonded specimens (n=6) were then stored in de-ionized water at 37oC for 24 hours before being subjected to shear force with an Instron.
Results: Statistical analysis was conducted using One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s method to determine significant differences among groups (p<0.05). In self-etch mode, the SBS of OptiBond eXTRa Universal and OptiBond XTR are not statistically different from each other, but are significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of all the other adhesive products with the exception of the enamel SBS for Clearfill SE Bond2. In total-etch mode, the SBS of OptiBond eXTRa is significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of all the other adhesive products indicated for total-etch protocol with the exception of the enamel SBS for Scotchbond Universal.
Conclusions: OptiBond eXTRa Universal maintains the excellent bond performance of OptiBond XTR, and they yield the highest average bond strength to both dentin and enamel in all etching modes among all tested adhesive products. OptiBond eXTRa Universal performs well in self-etch, selective-etch and total-etch modes.
