Clinical Evaluation of a Toothpaste Containing Bioactive Materials on Dentine Hypersensitivity

Objectives: To evaluate a toothpaste containing hydrolysable potassium calcium phosphosilicate active materials (SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Na2O) to relieve dentin hypersensitivity in Chinese population.
Methods: Based on the principle of randomized, double-blind and negative controlled design,72 subjects aged 25 to 56 were randomized divided into study group [using toothpastes containing hydrolysable potassium calcium phosphosilicate active materials (SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Na2O) ] and control group (using commercially available common anti-decay toothpastes) according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. DH was assessed at 0, 4 and 8 weeks, using two independent stimulus-based efficacy measures [a tactile stimulus (Yeaple probe Score) followed by an evaporative air stimulus (with Schiff Sensitivity Score)].
Results: At Week 4,a significant statistical difference(P<0.05)was observed that the Yeaple probe Score and the Schiff Sensitivity Score of the study group were respectively reduced 18.3% and 11.5% compared with the control group. At Week 8,a highly significant statistical difference(P<0.001)was observed that the Yeaple probe Score and the Schiff Sensitivity Score of the study group were respectively reduced 92.0% and 24.9% compared with the control group.
Conclusions: The results of this study showed that a toothpaste containing hydrolysable potassium calcium phosphosilicate active materials (SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Na2O) reduced dentinal sensitivity effectively in a Chinese population.
