Riva Star (SDF + KI) Shear Bond Strength Analysis

Objectives: Determine if the pre-treatment application of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) with or without potassium iodide (KI) affects the shear bond strength of conventional glass ionomer cements (GIC) or resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC).
Methods: Twenty-four tooth samples, of 3.5mm diameter exposed dentin (please refer to Table 1 for the four treatment groups), were etched with Super Etch 37% Phosphoric Acid Etchant Gel (SDI Limited) for 5 seconds, treated with Riva Star (SDF+KI (n=12)) or SDF alone (n=12) according to manufacturer’s instructions. The samples were then restored with either Riva SC (conventional GIC) (n=12) alone or a sample of Riva Bond LC (RMGIC) with Luna composite (n=8) (all products manufactured by SDI Limited). All materials were used according to manufacturer’s instructions. Samples were stored in 100% humidity for 1 hour at 37°C. After 1 hour, samples were fully immersed in deionized water and returned to 37°C for 24 hours. At 24 hours, samples underwent shear bond strength testing with a Universal Testing Machine with cross-head speed 0.75mm/min (Instron® 5942, Norwood, MA). Data was analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed rank test (GIC) and a paired T-test (RMGIC). Comparisons were considered significant at p<0.05.
Results: There was no significant difference in shear bond strengths (mPA) between Conventional GIC groups when pre-treated with SDF+KI (4.72 ± 0.87) or SDF alone (4.66 ± 1.98). There was a significant difference found between RMGIC groups when treated with SDF+KI (10.31 ± 0.81) or SDF alone (8.59 ± 0.757). See Table 2 for results.
Conclusions: The use of KI after treating dentin with SDF had no effect on shear bond strength with conventional GIC but did increase the shear bond strength of the RMGI cement restorations. Additional research is needed due to small sample size and debonded samples.
