Periodontal Diseases: Prevalence And Associated Factors In Chinese Adults

Objectives: To assess periodontal health conditions among 55-74 years old Chinese people and to analyze associated factors in periodontal diseases.
Methods: Totally 9054 subjects aged 55-74 were enrolled in this study from all 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of Chinese mainland. All subjects underwent clinical examination and a questionnaire survey collecting information on sociodemographic characteristics and oral habits. The t-test, the chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were performed to analyze data.
Results: Percentage of people with healthy periodontal conditions was 5.0% in 55-64 age group and 9.3% in 65-74 age group. Prevalence of probe bleeding and calculus among 55-64-year-olds and 65-74-year-olds were 88.4%, 96.4% and 82.6%, 90.3% respectively. Furthermore, prevalence of probing depth ≥ 4mm and attachment loss >3mm was 69.3%, 69.9% in people aged 55-64 and 64.6%,74.2% in people aged 65-74. In addition, AL>3mm was associated with age, gender, smoking, toothbrushing frequency and using toothpick.
Conclusions: Periodontal diseases were highly prevalent among 55-74-year-old Chinese adults. Age, gender, smoking, toothbrushing frequency and using toothpick could be risk factors in periodontal diseases.
