Occlusal Wear Patterns During Sleep Bruxism In Angle Class I Subjects
Objectives: To determine and compare occlusal wear patterns (OWP) in Angle class I subjects during sleep bruxism (SB). Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was performed in a convenience sample of 96 subjects (41 males and 55 females) aged between 12-45 years. Written informed consent was obtained from each participant after a full explanation of the study. Bruxchecker (BC) was used for the detection of OWP associated with SB, which were classified into: Canine Guidance (CG), Group Function (GF) and Bilateral Balanced (BB) with Mediotrusive Contact (MC) or Mediotrusive Grinding (MG). Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software package version 23.0. Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were apply for frequency comparison data. Results: The general distribution for the OWP was as follows: 78% for GF [GF+MG (76%), GF+MC (24%)], 17% for CG [CG+MG (50%), CG+MC (50%)] and 5% for BB [BB+MG (60%), BB+MC (40%). The mediotrusive side reported a statistically significant difference for GF+MG and GF+MC (p=0.035). According to age, a statistically significant increase for CG+MG was found over time (p=0.028). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups with respect to sex. Conclusions: In general, the predominant occlusal wear pattern during sleep bruxism for this sample was GF, followed by CG and BB with greater presence of MG in GF. However, over time, there was a tendency for MG to decrease in GF and to increase in CG. The OWP distribution was similar in males and females. Therefore, the results suggest that any occlusal wear pattern during sleep bruxism can be observed in Angle class I molar occlusion subjects. In fact, group function was more prevalent than the canine guidance commonly reported and related to class I.
