Obesity and Periodontal disease in Dental School Population
Objectives: The objective of this study was retrospectively study of therelationship between periodontal disease and obesity at University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Methods: In this retrospective study electronic medical and dental records of 4410 patients between January 1,2014 to December 30,2016from axiUm (Exan Acaemic, Las Vegas NV) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentl Medicine were reviewed. Results: Of the 4410 records selected for the study , 2150 were females and 2260 were males. Average age was 31 years. the prevalence of periodontal disease was 49.6% in obese population and about 49.2% for non obese population. the odds ratio for obese to non obese population for periodontal disease were 1.02 (p=0.80). Logistic regression modeling was used to assess the relationship between periodontal disease and obesity. It was adjusted for age, smoking , diabetes and compromised health status. Conclusions: The prevalance of periodontal disease in obese group was 49% but effect of obesity was not significant. Since this was self report, the patient may not report the weight correctly. This study needs to be done with a larger group and a prospective manner to see the true relationship between periodontal disease and obesity.
