Implant Placement Precision Among Novice Clinicians Utilizing 3D Printed Guides
Objectives: The pilot study was conducted to evaluate the precision of dental implants placed by novice clinicians with the aid of a standardized, three-dimensionally printed surgical guide. Methods: The multisite precision study was performed with a set of seven 3D printed treatment planning models and guides for the #8 implant site. The surgical guides were designed with the 3Shape Dental Studio and exported as STL files. The surgical guides and models were printed on the Form2 3D Printer using Dental SG Resin and the seven maxillary models were printed using dental model resin. A 3.7 mm x 13 mm Zimmer Tapered Screw Vent (TSV) Implant was placed into each model by two novices and one expert clinician. The implant mount was left in place to better observe differences in implant placement among clinicians. The models were optically scanned with a desktop scanner, D900 by 3Shape, and exported as STL files. 3D Slicer was employed to perform the surface to surface registrations and closest point analysis with color mapping was conducted with Geomagic Control and MeshValmet. The level of clinical significant difference was set at 0.5mm. Results: The implants placed by the novice clinicians demonstrated an average absolute distance difference of 0.03mm +/- 0.04mm using the surgical guide and is within the level of clinical accuracy. No displacement difference beyond the level of clinical accuracy was appreciated at the implant site with color mapping. The average absolute distance difference between the expert and novice clinicians was 0.12mm +/-0.15mm with a maximum distance difference of 1.8mm appreciated with color mapping at the implant site. Conclusions: Implants placed by novice clinicians with 3D printed surgical guides demonstrate a precision that is within the level of clinical accuracy. However, clinically significant differences were observed between expert and novice clinicians. Further research is recommended.
