Preparation of Dental Resins Using Nanoparticulate Organophilic Clays

Objectives: The objective of this study was to prepare dental nano hybrids incorporating charge / organophilic clay, aiming to obtain a restorative material with mechanical properties similar to those of commercial microhybrid and nanohybrid composites.
Methods: Nanohybrids were prepared with silica and organophilic clay (R 5 Cl 5 Si, R 10 Cl 10 Si, R 15 C 15 Si). In the preparation of dental resins, the monomer employed was bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) mixed with diluent, coupling agent, and photoinitiator polymerization agent. Groups of samples were synthesized with the polymerization / coupling agent monomer / diluent / photoinitiator agent (dental polymer matrix). The samples were prepared by mechanical mixing of the polymer matrix with two fillers (C20A and silica), in the proportion of 1: 1, with contents of the mixture of the corresponding 10, 20 and 30 pcr. The three resins synthesized were characterized by three-point bending, microtracking and micro-shear testing
Results: Prepared nanohybrids (R5C5Si, R10C10Si, R15C15Si) meet the classification of ISO 4049 for Type 1 materials and, therefore, in the same way as commercial (Z100 and Supreme) composites, these nano hybrids can be indicated as restorers of occlusal surfaces subject to the great masticatory load. The mechanical characterizations of the nanohybrid R5C5Si, R10C10Si, R15C15Si obtained results similar to commercial Z100 and Supreme.
Conclusions: Therefore, it is evidenced that it is possible to prepare nanoparticulate dental resins with mechanical properties similar to commercial resins by a simple method of preparation with organophilic clay and silica, incorporated into the Bis-GMA monomer, with a low cost, making them commercially more competitive.
