Associating Infant's Sex, Teeth and Oral Hygiene With Salivary Proteins
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association of sex, dental eruption and oral hygiene habits with protein profile in whole saliva of infants during 6, 9 and 12 months of life. Methods: Seventy-six healthy infants, both genders, were recruited from Maternity School Assis Chateaubriand (Fortaleza, Brazil). Following intraoral examination, saliva was collected during the 6th, 9th and 12th months of life. After addition of protease inhibitor, samples were centrifuged, lyophilized and stored at -80C until analysis. Protein profile was determined by unidimensional electrophoresis. Results: Data was analyzed using Fisher’s Exact or chi-square tests (p<0.05). A total of 31 (6th), 28 (9th), and 24 (12th) bands were identified in saliva. Presence of teeth was associated with bands 197kD (6th month, p=0.007), and 250kD (12th month, p=0.014). Sex associated with band 83kD (12th month, p=0.036). Presence of regular oral hygiene associated with bands 152kD (6th month, p=0.048), 124 kD and 62 kD (9th month, p=0.027; p=0.025). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the presence of teeth relates to protein expression during the infant’s 6th and 12th months, whereas regular hygiene habits relate to protein expression during the 6th and 9th months. However, sex only appears to associate with protein expression in saliva at the 12th month of life.
