Optimization of a Bioglass/Polysufone Bur for Caries Removal
Objectives: To characterise the interaction of bioactive glass 45S5 (BAG) embedded in a polymer bur with human dentine, including the selective removal of dental caries and the remineralisation of dentine. Characterisation was carried out using two-photon microscopy and hardness measurements. Methods: To create prototype burs, bioglass particles of different sizes (1 – 16 μm and 30-70 μm) were mixed with pellets of Polysulfone (PSu) for extrusion. Knoop micro hardness (diamond indentation) measurements were carried out. The burs were tested using a hand piece at 650 rpm 3 min for selective removal of infected dentine. Tissues were characterised using two-photon microscopy before and after bur interactions on carious extracted teeth Results: Preliminary results showed the prototype bur to be of suitable hardness using Bioglass particles differing from 1-16 μm and 30-70 μm. Further, the bur was shown to remove caries dentine while not affecting sound dentine. Preliminary data using two-photon microscopy showed the deposition of Bioglass particles on sound dentine. Conclusions: Selective removal of caries joined with possibility of remineralisation of dentine potential was shown using various sizes of embedded bioactive glass particles in polysulfone. This could lead to better management of deep caries lesions. In addition to further conservative restorative treatment.
