Genotoxicity, Cytotoxicity, Phytochemical Analysis of Strawberry Extract on Oral Cancer

Objectives: This study aims to assess the phytochemical constituents and to analyse genotoxic and cytotoxic potentials of Strawberry extract on oral squamous cancer cell lines.
Methods: Preliminary phytochemical analysis of strawberry was performed. MTT assay for evaluating the cytotoxicity potential of the extract on oral cancer cell lines was performed. The genotoxicity is analysed by DNA Fragmentation. DNA isolation and DNA fragmentation is done in a step wise manner. Agarose gel electrophoresis is done and DNA is viewed using ethidium bromide under UV light.
Results: Strawberry was proved to contain anti-cancerous properties. Phytoconstituents such as flavonoids, phenols were present in the strawberry extract. When genotoxicity was analysed, DNA fragmentation occurred in all the three concentrations. Strawberry also exhibited increased cytotoxicity with increased concentration.
Conclusions: The proteolytic enzymes in Strawberry used as a phytomedical compound demonstrates anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, absorption of antibiotic drugs, anti-thrombotic, inhibition of tumor cells proliferation and exhibition of strong immunogenicity. The phyto constituents found in strawberry reveals the antioxidant property. The study exposed the cytotoxic potential and antitumor properties of strawberry. The potential to develop strawberry as an anticancer drug is a thrust area for future research in drug designing industry.
