Influence of Different Pre-treatments on the Retention of Fiberglass Posts

Objectives: To evaluate the adhesive bond strength of a dental cement in the cementation of fiberglass posts with different types of surface pretreatments and adhesion approaches.
Methods: 20 healthy human upper central incisors, extracted due to orthodontic or periodontal motives, yielded by the IUEM tooth bank were sectioned in two halves, cut in the buccal-lingual sense and randomly divided in 4 groups (n = 10). The adhesive system used for all groups was the Scotchbond™ Universal. The groups were as follows: (1) CG ER, Control group with adhesion under Etch & Rinse mode; (2) CG SE, Control group with adhesion under the Self-Etch mode; (3) GAO ER, Group in which the posts were treated with aluminum oxide and adhesion was under Etch & Rinse mode. (4) GAO SE, Group in which the posts were treated with aluminum oxide and adhesion was under the Self-Etch mode. After the 40 teeth halves were obtained with the aid of a hard tissue microtome (Accutom-50, Struers, Denmark), a glass fiber post (RelyX™ Post Fiber, 3M ESPE, Sheefeld, Germany) was cemented with RelyX™ Ultimate, (3M ESPE, Sheefeld, Germany) as described above. Finally, 1 mm thick slices were sectioned and tested on an Universal Testing Machine (Shimadzu Autograph, Tokyo, Japan) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm / min. Data were analyzed by ANOVA two-way, for group comparisons at the 5% level of significance.
Results: Adhesive strength values, expressed in MPa, did not differ between groups exposed to different surface pretreatment nor between groups treated with different adhesion approaches.
Conclusions: RelyX ™ Fiber Post posts, subjected to different surface treatments, when cemented with RelyX ™ Ultimate and Scotchbond™ Universal, did not present significant differences between them.
