Efficacy of MI Paste for Remineralization in MIH-Affected Incisors: A 3-months Clinical Study

Objectives: Molar Incisor Hypomineralization(MIH) is characterized by a developmentally derived deficiency in mineral enamel. There are many agents like fluoride toothpastes, fluoride varnishes, fluoride mouth rinses and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) that are frequently used for the remineralization of teeth with MIH. CPP-ACP complexes are anticariogenic and capable of remineralizing the early stages of enamel lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CPP-ACPF (GC MI Paste Plus) on remineralization of anterior teeth affected by MIH by means of Light-Induced Fluorescence- LF.
Methods: Twenty-six healthy 8-12-year-old children (mean±SD: 9.11± 1.39) (15 boys 11 girls) were selected according to different clinically diagnosed levels [2(2) or 2(1) codes white or creamy opacities-demarcated opacity] of MIH, proposed by Ghanim et al.(2015). The patient was instructed to use GC MI Paste Plus for two times per day for three months in order to obtain enamel remineralization. The efficacy of remineralizing agent on the remineralization of MIH was evaluated by DIAGNOdent Pen at baseline and after 3 months. The data were analyzed by using SPSS. Means and standard deviations for each group were used for descriptive statistics. Paired sample t tests were used.
Results: All patients (considering n= 116 lesions) showed enamel alterations in lower and upper incisors, affected by MIH. The mean of DIAGNOdent Pen measurement of all patients at baseline was 7.23±4.51and 5.69±3.99 after 3 months. The mean all DIAGNOdent Pen scores from all patients were decreased and the differences were statistically significant (p<0.01).
GC MI Paste Plus Topical Cream had significant effect on remineralization of lower and upper anterior teeth with MIH lesions at various intervals of observations (p<0.0001).
Conclusions: GC MI Paste Plus Topical Cream is highly beneficial for the remineralization of non-cavitated MIH lesions. We observed favorable effect on the remineralization of MIH lesions in anterior teeth after 3 months.
