Antibacterial and Antifungal Effect of M.chamomilla, P.amarus and C.spinosa

Objectives: Evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal effect of the organic extracts of Matricaria camomila, Phyllantus amarus and Caesalpinia spinosa on Streptococcus mutans, Enteroco faecalis and Candida Albicans.
Methods: Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25293, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and Candida albicans ATCC 24433 were used. The crude organic extracts (COE) of Matricaria chamomilla, Phyllantus amarus and Caesalpinia spinosa were obtained and combinations of these were made, which were diluted in dimethylsulfoxide DMSO (20mg/ml, 40 mg/ml). The antibacterial and antifungal effect of the three plants and their combinations were evaluated by well diffusion and an inhibitory halo reading was performed using a vernier. The controls were DMSO, Chlorhexidine and Nystatin.
Results: COEs or their combinations had no effect against Streptococcus mutans and Enterococus faecalis obtaining halos of 0 mm compaired to chlorhexidine: 22.95-0.75mm. Halos of inhibition against candida albicans: Matricaria chamomilla 20mg/ml: 11.97-0.26mm, Matricaria chamomilla 40mg/ml: 12.45-0.05mm, Phyllantus amarus 20mg/ml: 14.92-1.12mm, Phyllantus amarus 40mg/ml: 19.25-2.27mm, Caesalpina spinosa 20mg/ml: 13.32-0.47mm, Caesalpina spinosa 40mg/ml: 15.02-6.74mm, Matricaria/Phyllantus 20mg/ml: 18.75-2.02mm, Matricaria/Phyllantus 40mg/ml: 22.17-1.45mm, Matricaria/Caesalpinia 20mg/ml: 15.67-1.35mm, Matricaria/Caesalpinia 40mg/ml: 16.9-2.04mm, Phyllantus/Caesalpinia 20mg/ml: 17.52-0.75mm, Phyllantus/Caesalpinia 40mg/ml: 19.97-0.68mm, Matricaria/Phyllantus/Caesalpinia 20mg/ml: 17.77-1.00mm, Matricaria/Phyllantus/Caesalpinia 40mg/ml: 22.82-0.62mm, Nystatin: 17.55-0.49mm
Conclusions: The plants studied had no effect on Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. They had an effect against Candida albicans.
