Influence of Denture Cleaners on Surface Roughness of Soft Liners
Objectives: The rough surface of silicone soft liners increases adhesion of micromorphology; therefore, a cleaning method that does not roughen the surface is desired. The purpose of this study was to clarify denture cleaners less increase surface roughness of silicone soft liners. Methods: We used two types of silicone soft liners with maximum hardness [GC Reline2 Soft (GS)] and minimum hardness [Sofreliner Supersoft (SS)] in our past research. The specimens were made by seating the liner material on denture base acrylic resin (n=5). The specimens were immersed (1,440h) in tap water (W) as control and three types of denture cleaners (neutral peroxide solution (N), sodium hypochlorite solution (S), and alkaline peroxide solution (A)). Arithmetic mean height (Sa) and maximum height (Sz) of the defined surface areas after immersion were compared between W and each detergent (ANOVA, Bonferroni’s, p<0.05). Results: Sa and Sz after immersion were shown in Table. In GS, there were no significant differences of Sa in N and A compared to W. There was no significant difference of Sz between N and W. In SS, Sa of S, N and A were significantly different from that of W. Sz of S, N and A differed significantly from that of W. Conclusions: In GS, neutral peroxide denture cleaners did not increase surface roughness than other denture cleaners used in this study. On the other hand, in SS, the amount of increase in surface roughness of soft liners was not significantly different between denture cleaners used in this study.
