The Effect of Coloring Liquid Dipping Time on the Color of Zirconia Ceramics
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the color of zirconia core materials after dipping in coloring liquid at different time intervals and to compare the color changes (ΔE) of dipped blocks with prefabricated shaded blocks. Methods: Forty-eight cube-shaped test specimens (8x8x8 mm) were fabricated using uncolored zirconia blocks by CAD-CAM and divided into 3 groups randomly (n=16/group). Group 1 was subjected to coloring liquid for 30 seconds, group 2 for 1 minute and group 3 for 2 minutes. Control group specimens were fabricated using prefabricated shaded blocks (n=16). After coloring and sintering, color differences between the test groups and control group were evaluated by using a spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis for evaluating color was performed by using one way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test (P ≤ .05). Results: The mean ΔE values were 77.34± 0.22 for control group, 78.16±0.95 for group 1, 81.16± 0.77 for group 2 and 78.54±0.88 for group 3. There was statistically significant difference between the control and test groups (p≤0.05). There was significantly no difference between group 1 and group 3 (p=0.515), however statistically significant difference was observed between group 2 and the other test groups (p≤0.05). Conclusions: : Coloring zirconia with dipping in coloring liquid is not a predictable procedure. If high esthetics is to be demanded, prefabricated shaded zirconia blocks should be preferred.
